Shiprock
Patriotism has always run deep in the Navajo culture. In World War II over 3600 Navajo served in the armed forces, and many thousands have served in every conflict since. R. C. Gorman's father, Carl Gorman, served as a Code Talker in WWII. After he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, and after the events of Sept. 11, R. C. was compelled to draw something that expressed the Navajo people's pride and love of country.

Shiprock is a beloved natural rock formation in the heart of Navajo Country where Gorman was raised. SHIPROCK, the lithograph, represents the Navajo Nation and all Americans. Her proud bearing shows the indomitable spirit of the Navajos and American people. The flag around her warms her, even as she protects it and keeps it close to her heart.
